Requires supplementation with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), 3.33g/L lactalbumin hydrolysate and 3.33g/L yeastolate before use as a growth medium as well as ambient CO2 in order to maintain physiological pH. Powder forms of Gibco cell culture medium require sodium bicarbonate supplementation, pH adjustment and filtration at the time of preparation.
Widely used for the growth of Spodeptera frugiperda cells, Sf9 and Sf21. Sf9 and Sf21 cells are routinely used to express recombinant protein using the Baculovirus Expression Vector System (BEVS). Was originally designed for the growth of cells from the Australian Emperor Gum Moth, Antherea eucalypti. It is modified as follows: with L-glutamine, without Lactalbumin hydrolysate, Yeastolate, Sodium bicarbonate. It does not contain lactalbumin hydrolysate and yeastolate commonly found in the supplemented version
