Column Temperature Control Mantles

Column Temperature Control Mantles

Column temperature control mantles are typically single-unit devices of varied sizes that are installed in laboratory mantles for preheating and precooling purposes. These mantles are petite, convenient to carry and can be mounted vertically. The heater/cooler unit in these mantles typically has a double-insulated cover to maintain the programmed temperature, usually in a range of 4°C (39°F) to 70°C (158°F).

Proper column temperature control is essential for reliable liquid chromatography separations, and column temperature control mantles are used to modify and maintain the temperature of liquid chromatography columns during analysis.

Controlling column temperatures when analyzing via high performance and other liquid chromatography procedures can help improve performance and reduce both analysis time and solvent use. As the column temperature increases, the separation process speeds up and generally becomes more efficient, depending on the compounds involved. Moreover, sample retention factors may change, or components may co-elute, and selectivity can be inverted by small temperature variations.

Many liquid chromatography instruments have a temperature-controlled chamber or oven in which columns can be placed. For instruments without this feature, an external column temperature control mantle may be a good way to maintain column temperatures during separations. The mantles can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool columns in preparation for the analyses, so that unexpected temperature changes do not affect the results.
