Selectively enrich and isolate Escherichia coli O157:H7 from food samples with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Modified Tryptone Soya Broth with Novobiocin. The presence of bile salts and Novobiocin in the medium inhibits the growth of non-target Gram positive organisms. Modified Tryptone Soya Broth is recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for selective enrichment of certain food samples prior to culture to enhance the recovery of E. coli O157: H71, 2.

E. coli is a part of commensal microbial flora of all animals, including humans. Most strains of E. coli are non-pathogenic and serve a useful function within the intestines by suppressing the growth of harmful bacteria. Some strains of E. coli are capable of causing gastroenteritis in humans, among them is E. coli serotype O157: H7, a rare variety which produces toxins that are closely related to the toxin produced by Shigella dysenteriae1. This toxin causes a severe gastroenteritis in humans commonly referred to as hemorrhagic colitis.

Use Modified Tryptone Soya Broth with Novobiocin for selective enrichment and isolation of E. coli O157:H7 from food samples.
