The SOX6 gene encodes a member of the SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) family of transcription factors, which are known to play vital roles in the regulation of developmental processes and cell fate determination. SOX6, along with its close relatives SOX5 and SOX13, constitutes the SOXD subfamily, which is involved in the regulation of the development of the central nervous system, skeletal system, and cartilage. SOX6 has been implicated in various functions, such as promoting cartilage formation by acting in conjunction with SOX9 to drive chondrogenesis.
